Frequently Asked Dental Questions

Graceville Dentists

We’re always happy to answer your questions about dentistry

Because we’ve been practicing dentistry for over 20 years, we’ve heard lots of questions about teeth, dentists and oral health. Following are a few of the most commonly asked questions, but if you can’t find the answer to your query, simply give us a call on 07 3379 3639 or ask online.

How often do I need a dental check-up?

We recommend scheduling a dental check-up every six months. Along with keeping gums healthy, the early detection and treatment of dental issues is always better. During check-ups, we can often pick up things before they become a major issue, minimising the need for lengthy and costly treatments.

If you have private health cover, talk to your health fund to check your level of cover and whether they reimburse you for six-monthly check-ups.

Should I reschedule my dental appointment if I’m sick?

Yes, please! Definitely reschedule if you’re sick. Please call us to discuss the issue (not text or email) or ask online and we will reschedule your appointment.

What happens if I need to cancel an appointment?

We understand life gets busy, however, if you do need to cancel your appointment, we do ask for 48 hours’ notice to fill the spot. If you give us less than 48 hours’ notice of rescheduling or cancellation, and we are unable to fill the cancelled appointment with someone else, there may be a fee charged due to the downtime of the practice.

We remind you 48 hours’ prior of your upcoming appointment via text and ask you to reply via text or call to confirm your appointment time.

If you fail to attend your scheduled appointment without notice, you may be charged a “Failed to Attend” fee due to the downtime of the practice. This is charged at the discretion of the dentist.

I’m on medication. Does the dentist need to know this?

Most definitely. When you first come to visit our practice, we’ll ask you to fill out a full medical history, including details of any medications, vitamins or supplements you are taking, as these can interact with the medicaments we use during your dental treatment. It’s very helpful if you can bring a list of your medications with you. This list needs to be updated every year and you must let us know if you’ve started on any new medications.

What can I expect to happen at my first appointment?

We will undertake an initial exam to assess your oral health and any issues you may be experiencing with your teeth or gums. We take a full record of what’s in your mouth, sometimes take pictures and/or a set of X-rays. You’ll have a full check-up, clean and fluoride treatment, which can take up to 1 hour. We give you a treatment plan if further treatment is required, and a quote including what you can claim through your fund, if possible.

I’m scared to come to the dentist. How can I overcome my hesitation?

When you phone to make your appointment, please let us know of your hesitation. We will work with you by giving you a longer appointment to go at your pace. We’re happy to help you relax, get to know you and understand your needs, always taking a friendly approach. Please be sure to let us know your concerns when you book and we’ll accommodate you in every possible way. Calm, relaxed care is always our aim.

What if I have a broken tooth?

Firstly, we will endeavour to relieve your pain and discomfort. Depending on the issue, if we can fix your tooth at that time, we will. Sometimes, we may need to book a further appointment, depending on the condition and work which needs to be completed.

I have a tooth ache, what should I do?

Call us to discuss the issue as soon as possible.

When should my child first see the dentist?

It’s a good idea to establish early dental check-ups to ensure your child continues to care for their dental health throughout their life.

As a broad guideline, we recommend booking their first visit around the age of 3, as most children have all their baby teeth by then, but it may be a little older for some.

On their first visit, we will greet your child and yourself, making sure they feel at ease, answer any questions, give them a ride in the chair and count their teeth. We’ll then do a polish and fluoride treatment if you and your child are comfortable. This helps your child get to know and trust us, to understand the process of going to the dentist and to become familiar with the sights, sounds and smells of a dental practice. We aim to always make this a positive experience which sets your child on a path to future oral health. That’s because we care about you and we love what we do.

How can I pay for my dental treatment?

We accept payments via EFTPOS, MasterCard, Visa, Amex, cash and cheques with no surcharge.

Where can I park to access Graceville Dental?

Car parking is provided at the rear of the premises. There are three spaces. If they are occupied, street parking is available nearby. Check our street view on Google Maps.

Do you accept private health fund payments?

Yes, we accept payments from all private health funds. Be sure to bring your private health fund card to your appointment, as payment is required on the day you visit. We will swipe your card through the terminal to facilitate an on-the-spot claim.

Graceville Dental is a Members First provider for BUPA and the HCF More for Teeth program.
