What age should you make your child’s first visit to the dentist?

Our dentists recommend your child visits the dentist at around 3 years of age, when all their baby teeth have come through. Should you have any concerns about their teeth or gums, you’re welcome to bring them in earlier if you wish.

The priority of our team is to ensure you and your child feel comfortable and relaxed at their first visit – and every visit to the dentist. On the first visit, we’ll greet them in a friendly way and start to establish their trust before putting them in the dentist’s chair. We want your child to get used to visiting the dentist while they’re young, so they’re happy to return regularly as they grow, without developing any fear of the dentist.

Our aim is to count their teeth, assess the condition of their teeth and gums and carry out a gentle clean. While children are growing, it’s important to monitor their dental development, so six-monthly check-ups are strongly advised.

By bringing your child in to see us early, we can diagnose any potential issues and establish a trusting, healthy relationship with our children’s dental team.

Teenagers and oral health

As your child grows, their jaw and teeth develop, with adult teeth coming through. Continued monitoring of the teeth during each stage of development ensures any problems are flagged and can be addressed as early as possible.

Many teenagers play contact sports, and we recommend they wear a fitted mouthguard for maximum protection of their teeth. We can make a mouthguard in a range of colours – just ask us.

When it comes to teenagers, we know many enjoy sugary sports drinks, which contain high levels of acid and sugar. Believe it or not, these drinks can start destroying teeth after only a few days of consistent use. Damaged teeth enamel can cause sensitivity and make teeth more susceptible to decay and cavities.

Is your family eligible for the Child Dental Benefit Schedule?

Funded by the Australian Government, the Child Dental Benefits Scheme is available for families with children aged 2-17 years. Families must receive government benefits, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A or a relevant Australian Government payment. Eligible children receive up to $1000 over two calendar years for preventative and restorative dentistry.

Eligible services include:

Examinations
X-rays
Cleaning
Fissure sealing
Fillings
Root canals
Extractions

Note: The CDBS does not cover cosmetic dental work or orthodontics.

Graceville Dental supports this initiative and we bulk-bill all dental treatment for children covered under the Child Dental Benefit Scheme. Our staff can check to see if you’re eligible and assess the remaining funds on your behalf. To check your eligibility for this scheme, please contact Medicare or talk to us.
